This series came together in zoos near and far — Hoenderdaell, Rhenen, and along the way through Denmark and Sweden. No safari, no wilderness, but the same question that keeps drawing me back to the camera: what do you see when an animal looks back — or almost does?
A lion that holds your gaze with a look that seems to reach back a thousand years. A mandrill, a snow leopard, a bonobo mother with her child, looking straight into the lens. But also a moose walking calmly through the grass, entirely indifferent to the camera. I'm not looking for the spectacle, but for the moment in between: a glance, a posture, a second of stillness or simply disregard. Even within the boundaries of a zoo, it's there — if you're willing to wait.
