Lots of fur, two horns and an occasional eye. Highland cattle roam freely in the dunes near Bergen aan Zee year-round, keeping the grass and shrubs trimmed short. They pay little attention to walkers, and even less to photographers.
I prefer to photograph them with the Fujifilm 150-600mm. Not because they are shy — far from it — but with an animal weighing seven hundred kilos, you prefer to keep some distance. The zoom also compresses the background nicely. Many photos were taken through shrubs or branches; this adds depth to the image. In post-processing I pull the saturation out of the greens and darken the edges, so all attention goes to the fur. One portrait worked better in black and white.
Posing is not something they do. Standing still, fortunately, is.
